When buying a used car (or probably even new) how do you find out what is the real value of the vehicle?

Is it public information for buyers to look at to know the true value of a car? Obviously I understand that dealers of car salesmen will sell the car higher than its value to make a profit, but if one can know the true value of a car he will have more leverage and will not be taken for a ride either. When buying a used car (or probably even new) how do you find out what is the real value of the vehicle?
You can find the value of a car newer than 1989 (I think) on the Kelley Blue Book website.
